Governing Transnational Security Threats: Putting the “Global” in the Global Struggle against Violent Extremism
“The Bush administration's recent decision to recast the 'Global War on Terrorism' (GWAT) as the 'Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism' (GSAVE), if largely a cosmetic move, nevertheless tokens what is a positive—and critical—shift in our understanding of the principal security threat in the world today. The tactics, strategies, and ideologies of our enemies go beyond 'terror' as it has been traditionally understood, and so to must our efforts to combat them go beyond the conduct of 'war' as we have traditionally employed it. It is no coincidence, then, that only one word survived the administration's change in nomenclature—the only thing certain about our present struggle is that it is truly 'global'.” Read more...

“Globalization is controversial. Early in November, protestors at the Summit of the Americas in Argentina hurled Molotov cocktails, looted stores, set bonfires, and torched a bank. In September, 250,000 protestors converged in Washington, D.C. to demonstrate against the Iraq war, IMF and World Bank policies.
