Free Trade Vs. Fair Trade: Does Global Trade Help Rich Countries or Poor Countries?
April 8, 2003
In the era of globalization, few issues are as contentious as international trade. While its advocates argue that global trade boosts prosperity for rich and poor nations alike, opponents counter that international regimes of commerce such as the World Trade Organization are hugely biased in favor of wealthy nations.
In an effort to bring greater understanding to these issues as well as their implications, the GW Center for the Study of Globalization, the International Affairs Society, and OXFAM Change of GW, brought together a panel of experts to lead a debate on the merits of international trade. In the lively and informative discussion, panelists touched on such topics as tariffs, the liberalization of agriculture, the World Trade Organization, and international financial institutions.
Attracting a crowd of roughly 100 individuals, the forum allowed both students and faculty to address questions directly to the panelists.
