Global Governance in New Product Commercialization: Evidence from the Mobile Telephone and Fuel Cell Industries

Research and Event Summaries

Project Abstract

The global governance of high technology industries, reflected in relationships between networks of firms and political and social institutions, plays a critical role in the commercialization of new technologies. While there is evidence that some firms rely on institutions and resources in their global innovation system, others seem to operate in governance systems that are national or regional.

In this study, we will explore how these two oppositional forces of globalization and localization influence the emergence of global technologies and standards. We will explore how markets, governments, strategic inter-firm collaboration, and other institutions reflect firms' activities within these national and global innovation systems. If new technologies are being developed in global innovation systems, what then are the policy implications for national governments and for the creation of non-state actors as coordinating or regulatory agencies? Do firms earn higher performance when they collaborate globally? How can firms develop and protect their capabilities to interact with global competitors? The study will use field interviews and archival data to investigate these topics in the context of emerging technology industries.
