National Innovation System in a Globally Integrate Industry: A Longitudinal Analysis of National and Global Knowledge-Diffusion Networks
Research and Event Summaries
Project Abstract
Scientific knowledge comprises a strong source of competitive advantage for companies and for entire countries. Therefore, the contribution of technology knowledge to a country's international competitiveness has led scholars to explore how a national innovation system (NIS) can contribute to the innovation strength of country's firms. An NIS is comprised of resources and institutions, built through interactions among a country's research organizations, that domestic firms harness to successfully commercialize innovations. This national level of analysis has proven to be a useful frame of reference for understanding the diffusion of technological knowledge within national scientific communities. Recently, however, researchers have suggested that technological advances, growing capital requirements, and a convergence in product expectations have led to the emergence of globally-integrated industries that may be outgrowing national innovation systems.
This paper uses network analysis and field interviews to investigate whether the patterns of knowledge diffusion that arise in an emerging high technology industry reflect the presence of distinct national innovation systems, or a single, globally integrated global innovation system (GIS).
