Knowledge of how management theories and methods are spreading around the world would help managers, academics, and the general public understand the development of a shared language of management and shared management practices. The research proposed will create a method for charting the spread of management theories and methods. The approach taken will be to generate a list of many ways that the spread of management ideas and methods might be measured. This list will be submitted first to a group of colleagues in SBPM for further improvement and then to four groups of people—management professors in other countries, executives in large consulting firms, managers of international companies, and business journalists. The respondents will be asked to rate the measures on their feasibility (ease of collecting the data in other countries) and utility (importance or usefulness for either decision-making or general understanding). The respondents will also be asked to suggest additional measures.
Ideally, funds would be found to collect data each year and to review the list of measures periodically. This research would also estimate the annual cost of collecting the data, identify sources for collecting the data (both published reports and people around the world) and would generate a sample annual report.
