Full name and acronym: Centre for Development Studies (CDS)

Founding date: 1971

Objectives: (a) research on economic and social aspects of development at the regional, national and international levels; (b) theoretically informed empirical research; (c) dissemination of research findings; (d) academic training programmes at the MPhil and PhD levels.

Main projects in globalisation studies: (a) social protection in rural India and China; (b) international labour migration.

Outputs: Working papers, books, articles, seminars, workshops, website.

Staff numbers: 28 faculty (research) members plus supporting staff; more than 10 active Honorary Fellows plus Visiting Fellows (around 2 a year).

Director: Professor K.P. Kannan

Funding: core grants from the Indian Council of Social Science Research and the Government of Kerala; other grants from funding organisations. Endowment Units sponsored by the Indian Planning Commission and the Reserve Bank of India.
